NIKE SPRING CLASSIC – Nashville, Tn

Pilot Aquatic Club participated in All-American NIKE Spring Classic hosted by Nashville Aquatic Club last weekend at Centennial Sportsplex. The 3-day long invitational featured around 10 teams, some of those traveling from Boston and San Diego to compete. This was also Pilot’s first longcourse meet on its schedule and its first opportunity to race in a 50 meter course this summer.
In the midst of the record flooding where 13.5 inches of rain fell in less two days, 37 athletes of the 44 Pilot swimmers swam to personal lifetime best times.

“This was a great way to kick off our season,” says Head Age-Group Coach Jackie Bertucci. “The families on our team did a great job of weathering the storm and showing up to race. We had a lot of really good swims!”

Pilot Swimmers that achieved best times:
Will Arthur (13), Hayden Burns (13), Reese Catron (12), Simone Digby (10), Lucy Fortune (14), Allison Fowler (15), Rachel Fowler (15), Bailey Fritz (9), Emily Galdun (17), Mallory Gardner (13), Courtney Graff (12), Alex Hines (11), Andrew Hines (8), Will Kerr (13), Christina Klouda (13), Josiah Klouda (10), Alli Lapps (12), Bryar Long (12), Ben Myhre (16), John Myhre (14), Miles Nauss (18), Macy Neros (9), Evan Pinion (15), Dylan Rasnick (16), Ethan Sanders (10), Lindsay Sanders (9), Owen Sanders (12), Lauren Sapp (13), Addison Smith (8), Quinn Smith (12), Melinda Taylor (12), Adam Thomas (13), Derek Vaughn (14), Camilla Wang (14), Glenna Whaley (10), Natalie Widmer (11), and Hayden WIlliams (10)

Unfortunately, Sunday’s competition had to be cancelled due to the record flooding. Nearly four and a half feet of rain welled up outside the pool and began spilling in the doorways onto the deck. Although this served as entertainment for many of the swimmers, the building was evacuated so that everyone could return home safely.
Pilot Aquatic Club’s next competition will be the Inter-squad meet this Saturday (May 15th) at Student Aquatic Center. The Red vs. Gold action will begin with our 13 & over swimmers competing in the early morning, and the 12 and unders starting just before 10 a.m. Congratulations on a good beginning to the summer season, and GO PACK!!!

TISCA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010- Nashville,TN Another chapter in the history of the TISCA High School State Championships was written last weekend as 106 high school swim teams from across the state of Tennessee competed for the championship. A total of 881 athletes, 461 boys, 420 girls made up one of the most competitive state meets on record for the State Meet showdown.
Tennessee State Championships is a meet that contributes greatly to the growth of the sport of swimming. Swimmers get a chance to represent themselves and their schools, an experience that is very difficult to find outside of the United States. Some of our Pilot Swimmers had some comments on the meet:

Caleb Allen (JR) “I’m satisfied with my performance and our mentality was pretty positive as a team. Our mentality as a squad led us to our 2nd place team finish, especially on Saturday.”

Isaac Taylor (JR) “The competition was a lot faster than I thought it was gonna be. It just gave me more inspiration to go faster.”

Jenny Darby (JR) “I was really happy with my performances. The team atmosphere of this meet is really motivating and that’s what really inspired me to go fast.”

Kennedy Higdon (SR) “State was really fun this year. As a senior I’m really going miss the atmosphere of this meet and swimming with all my friends. I almost cried before my last race (400 free relay). It was a great way to finish my high school swimming career with Bearden.”

Dylan Rasnick (SO) “I liked the opportunity to bond with the other swimmers (at Webb). The meet being held in Nashville really helped our team come together. I always have fun at state because of the team atmosphere.”

Pilot Aquatic Club had over 75 individual athletes and 6 coaches representing the Knoxville area in the State competition last weekend. Pilot Aquatics Athletes combined to make up over 20% of swimmers representing their schools in the top 16 at evening finals, and over 30% in the top 8. Congratulations to all PACK Swimmers and your accomplishments in representing the Knoxville area. Pilot Aquatic Club will now direct its focus towards District,Southeastern, Sr. Sectional, and Age Group Sectional Championship meets held the next several weekends. GO PACK!!!

THANK YOU PARENTS,
Hello Piloteers,
I wanted to thank you for the time and effort you all put into the meet the past weekend. I talk to my swimmers incessantly about what a "Team" can accomplish when they all work together. We have literally transformed from a number of separate groups to a "Team" as far as our meets are concerned. Everyone, from our meet director, to our officials, to our timers came together to host one of the best meets I've ever been a part of. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

In an effort to host more prestigious meets (Juniors 2011, Grand Prix 2011 or 2012 and eventually Nationals) we have been under the microscope of USA swimming. Your hard work has brought us another step closer to reaching those goals. Please enjoy your well deserved break from hosting meets. We will be back at work this summer with two important meets (June invitational and Southeasterns). We'll need to bring the same enthusiasm and dedication to those meets in order to keep this trend going.

Congratulations, we can all feel very proud about this one.

Coach Jim Rumbaugh

Pilot Aquatic Club : January Classic Invite 2010

Winter Swimming action continued last week as Pilot Aquatic Club hosted its annual January Classic Invitational at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Pilot’s last competition took place over a month and a half ago, making the goal of the home invitational to test out new strokes and racing strategies made from the mid-season championship meet in Nashville.
The meet featured over 900 swimmers from 30 separate teams, and was clearly the best and smoothly run meet Pilot has hosted since opening Allan Jones Aquatic Center in the summer of 2008.
Reflecting this, Pilot swimmers left with many accomplishments. Pilot had 42 athletes that swam to all-time personal best times. Also, 27 swimmers swam to Southeastern Championship time standards, and 7 swimmers also accomplished Age Group Sectional Time Standards, which qualifies them to compete against the Southern Zone’s best age groupers (14 & unders) mid-March in Charlotte North Carolina.
Upcoming meets for Pilot Aquatic Club include the ACAC Lois Weir Invitational in Oak Ridge February 5th-7th, TISCA High School State Championships in Nashville (Feb. 12-13), District 8 & under Championships and Southeastern last chance meet, held at Baylor School of Chattanooga the 20th-21st of February. These meets will be Pilot’s last chances to prepare for Southeastern Championship in Nashville, and either Age Group or Senior Sectional Championship meets later in March.
A special thanks goes out to all parents, workers, officials, and coaches that contributed to the Pilot Aquatic Club’s January Classic Invitational 2010. Your contributions created a great atmosphere for over 900 swimmers to compete in. Thank you and GO PACK!

Pinion Breaks Records on a National Scale- Michael Phelps' Records Smashed
Pilot Aquatic Club is proud to report the wonderful accomplishments of Evan Pinion (14) at Long Course Junior Nationals this past week in Federal Way, Washington.  Pinion placed 13th in the 1500 meter freestyle (15:47.66), 11th in the 400 meter freestyle (3:57.61), 3rd in the 800 meter freestyle (8:08.75), and 83rd in the 200 freestyle (1:55.76) as a fourteen year old, and first time experience at a National Meet.   These times are all new PACK 13-14 age group records, and the 800 freestyle result is also a new Senior Team Record for Pilot Aquatic Club.

The most outstanding performances, however, were the 400 and 800 freestyles, where Evan also broke National Age Group records previously held by none other than Michael Phelps.  These records were set in the year 2000, just several months before Phelps’ first Olympic appearance in Sydney, Australia.
Congratulations to Evan Pinion for his incredible accomplishments, hard work, and representation of the Pinion Family and Pilot Aquatic Club.  We are all very proud of you!

Lundquist sets U.S. record
23-second barrier broken in 100 fly

BY ADAM GREENE, sports@knoxnews.com
Those watching at the Southern Zone Eastern Sectional Championships on Saturday were stunned after Bryan Lundquist's performance in the men's 100-meter butterfly, but not for the right reasons.
Lundquist had just finished in last place at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center. Only his club coach and family in attendance knew what he had truly accomplished. Lundquist's 50-meter time of 22.91 seconds at the split was a new United States record and the first American to clock under 23 seconds.

Gaylor wins 800 free at Zones
Bearden junior off to U.S. Open

BY ADAM GREENE sports@knoxnews.com
Division I and Division II college swimmers were in the pool at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the University of Tennessee campus Thursday.

However, a rising junior from Bearden High School won the gold medal in the men's 800-meter freestyle at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone Eastern Sectional Swim Meet.

John Paul Gaylor beat his career-best time from a year ago by nearly six seconds and his next-closest competitor, Baylor Swim Club's Nathan Vredeveld, by more than four seconds to win in 8 minutes, 20.53 seconds. While Gaylor may have surprised some of his collegiate opponents, no one was more shocked than Gaylor.

PACK Fuels the Fire in Hotlanta
Pilot Aquatic Club Seniors attended the Betsy Dubar Invitational in Atlanta, Ga his past weekend with three major goals in mind:  Swim as fast as possible, make adjustments where needed from the PACK Invitational, and have some fun.

Head Coach Jim Rumbaugh was pleased with the team’s progress over the past two weeks:

“The kids are showing good progress in the learning process and adjusting to mistakes they’ve made in the past.  Most of the team’s swims were good improvements.  And even though they are tired, we’re already starting to swim faster with new technique. ”

The team also took part in quite a few activities while staying in Atlanta.  The team had dinner at Dave and Busters, a restaurant that serves everything from wings to steak, and provides interactive and video gaming as part of the entertainment.

Following the Sunday session of the meet, the team hiked Stone Mountain.  Stone Mountain is one of the largest exposed pieces of granite in the world, and also serves as a memorial to three figures of the Confederate States of America which are carved in the side of the mountain: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.

The team finished up the trip with a trip to Six Flags over Georgia.  It was a perfect day for attending a theme park, as there were almost no lines to wait in.  As a result everyone was able to ride many rides more than once and experience a lot of the park in one day’s time.

Pilot Aquatic Club is now looking forward to its Senior Invitational, hosted here in Knoxville from June 11th through the 14th at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
