PILOT AQUATIC CLUB – January Classic 2011sadf
Pilot Aquatic Club kicked off the New Year with their January Classic Invitation at Allen Jones Aquatic Center.  The meet featured 30 teams and over 970 swimmers in the 3-day competition on UT’s campus.  This meet served as a real test to see how Pilot has improved over its Christmas training and endured the interruption of life from the multiple snow storms that have effected Knoxville over the past few months.

The meet was a huge success as 85% of the Pilot athletes who competed in the meet swam life-time best swims, and served as a valuable learning opportunity in the preparation for our the up-coming championship season.  Also 31 swimmers achieved new Southeastern qualifying standards and 17 swimmers achieved Age Group Sectional qualifying times.  We should have a very large showing this Championship season.

Pilot will now focus on its upcoming meets at the Lois Weir Invitational (ACAC) next weekend and District Championships held in Chattanooga in preparation for Southeasterns and Age Group Sectionals.  Our older kids will be representing their high school teams in the KISL Regional Championship Meet held on Saturday at Allen Jones.
Following that will be TISCA State Championships, Southeasterns in Nashville, and Senior Sectionals held in Cary North Carolina.  Best of luck in your preparation and GO PACK!!!

Special thanks to all Parents, Swimmers, Coaches and Volunteers who helped run our meet this past weekend.  We all had to pull together to make a very large meet a success, and we passed with flying colors.  Thank you so much for your efforts.

Short course swimming action continued last weekend at Nashville Aquatic Club’s Music City Invitational. This meet was Pilot’s mid-season rest meet where athletes get their first glimpse of where they stand in results of their fall training. The meet featured three days of prelims/finals competition against teams out of Kentucky and Tennessee for the 11 and older athletes, and timed final events for the 10 and unders.

The meet was a huge success featuring 87% of the 84 Pilot Swimmers who competed over the weekend finishing with Personal Life-time Best times. 20 Swimmers earned brand new Southeastern Championship Standards and 14 of our 13-14 or younger athletes earned Age Group Sectional Qualifying Standards!

“Our performance in Nashville this weekend was a huge success. It was a great chance for the coaching staff to evaluate where their swimmers are at this point of the season. The swimmers did a great job at getting up and executing their racing strategies in the morning with a majority of the older swimmers getting a chance to swim in the Finals at night. The success from this meet will be a huge motivational factor heading into Christmas training and gearing up towards Southeasterns.” ~ Jr Group Coach Lizzie Fleming

This meet is only a preview for what is to come in the next few months with Pilot Aquatic Club. Upcoming invitational meets for Pilot, where our swimmers can still qualify for Southeasterns, Age Group Sectionals, Senior Sectionals, or Summer National meets include the ACAC Polar Express Invite this weekend (Dec 11th), The Pilot Aquatic Club January Classic Invite (Jan 14th-16th), and The ACAC Lois Weir Invite (Feb. 4-6th).

Congratulations to all Pilot Swimmers on their wonderful accomplishments in Nashville last weekend. Your coaches and family here at Pilot are all very proud of you all.

A special good luck goes out to our National Qualifiers Jenny Darby, Ally Hardesty, Hannah Pinion, Madison Thomas, Hayden Baker, John Paul Gaylor, Evan Pinion, and Dylan Rasnick who will compete at Short course Junior National Championships this week in Atlanta Georgia.

IN MEMORY OF COACH RAY BUSSARD

sfd

Dear Pilot Family,

It is with much sadness that I send this story to you. Jackie's father, Ray Bussard, died last night. The Bussard family is being held deep in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--The man who revived Tennessee's swimming and diving program, Ray Bussard, passed away here Wednesday evening at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was 82.

"This is a big loss for the Tennessee swimming and diving program, he was one of the best all-time," head coach John Trembley, who swam for Bussard, said. "Ray will forever be remembered as an icon in the swimming world. He was creative, hard-working, persistent and an innovator for our sport.

"He gave our program many of the traditions we still have today. He will always be respected by those who competed against him, appreciated by those who competed for him and missed by us all."

In his time at the helm of the Tennessee swimming program, Ray Bussard led UT to new heights of the program's history with an overall coaching record of 252-20 (.926) in 21 seasons. His dual meet record of 178-20 (.899) included nine undefeated seasons.

Bussard guided the Tennessee program from its infancy in 1968 to an NCAA championship 10 years later. The title run of 1978 added luster to a sparkling eight-year span from 1972-1979, during which the Vols never finished out of the top four in the country.

Bussard came to the University of Tennessee in the winter of 1966, saw the construction of the UT Aquatic Center in 1967, and in 1968, put the Vols on the road that would establish them as a national power. After a 32nd-place finish in 1969, Bussard led teams that were perennial top-10 finishers at the NCAA championships from 1970-79. He coached the swim team at UT for 22 years, retired in 1989, the year the UT Student Aquatic Center indoor pool was named for him. His tenure was the longest for a head coach at UT without interrupted service until Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt surpassed that achievement.

Even as he compiled an impressive win-loss record, Bussard also became known for the added tradition he brought to the sport of swimming. The Vols are noted around the nation for wearing coonskin caps before meets, emptying a bottle of their home water into an opponent's pool and featuring the Vol Timettes at all home meets. Such innovations gained Bussard the reputation of being an innovative promoter of swimming in his day and responsible for putting "show biz" into the sport.

Bussard's arrival in Knoxville represented the beginning of a new era in Tennessee athletics as the Volunteers had not competed in swimming at the NCAA level since 1959. Bussard, who had never coached the sport of swimming at a collegiate level, led an all-freshmen squad to a second-place finish in the Southeastern Conference. The following year, the Vols broke Florida's 13-year streak of SEC championships. Three years later in 1972, Bussard won another conference title and won the next six consecutively until 1979, when the streak was broken. Bussard added the only NCAA championship the Vols have won in 1978.

Bussard received National Coach of the Year honors in 1972 and 1978, as well as being named the SEC Coach of the Year in 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978. He was an assistant coach at the USA-USSR Dual Meet in 1978 and served as Meet Coordinator for the 1982 USA-USSR Dual Meet held at UT. Bussard also participated in the 1979 Pan American Games as an assistant swimming coach. He also served as an assistant on the 1984 U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

Bussard has also been inducted into the Tennessee Swimming Hall of Fame, International Swimming Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, Virignia Sports Hall of Fame and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Bridgewater College. In 1984 he received the National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy from the College Swim Coaches Association.

A native of Hot Springs, Va., Bussard graduated from Bridgewater College, where he was National AAU All-Around champion in track and field, an All-State football player and an all-tournament selection in basketball.

Bussard is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Cauley, and their three daughters, Terry Ann, Christy and Jacqueline.

The family will receive friends at Mann Heritage Chapel, located at 6200 Kingston Pike, Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Funeral services are set for Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 645 St. John Court in Farragut. Internment will be in Bath County, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Tennessee swimming and diving program. Contact the swimming and diving office at (865) 974-1258 for more information.

L;KAJSDF5 Pilot Athletes Represented at U.S. Nationals 2010
– Irvine, CA 8/03 - 8/07/2010

The sun wasn’t the only thing shining in southern California last week as 1438 athletes represented over 320 teams in the five-day U.S. National competition at the William Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine California. Over 30 Olympians competed in the meet, including big names like Amanda Beard, Natalie Coughlin, Ryan Lochte, Aaron Piersol, Michael Phelps, Rebecca Soni, and Dana Vollmer. Pilot Aquatic Club had 5 individuals representing the team in Irvine: Hayden Baker (17), John Paul Gaylor (17), Katie Keel (19), Evan Pinion (15), and Alex Ward (18).

Katie Keel (19) finished in the top 100 of the womens competition, placing 94th in the 100 meter breaststroke, and also competed in time trials for the 200 meter breaststroke and the 50 meter freestyle. Hayden Baker finished 77th in the 200 butterfly, 99th in the 100 butterfly, and swam a life-time best time in the 200 meter freestyle time trials. John Paul Gaylor finished 47th in the 1500 meter freestyle, and swam life-time best times in the 400 and 200 meter freestyles. Alex Ward capped off his senior year with Pilot finishing 110th in the 400 IM, 44th in the 200 butterfly, and 90th in the 100 meter butterfly.

Highlighting Pilot’s performance at U.S. Open was 15-year-old Evan Pinion finishing 53rd in the 200 meter freestyle, 76th in the 200 meter butterfly, and 10th in the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 15:25.54. Also swimming in his first of hopefully many finals in the national scene, Evan finished 10th in the 400 meter freestyle (3:53.04). Those results in the 1500 and 400 meter freestyles set 2 new Pilot Team records in the Open Age Group, placing Evan among the top 2 swimmers in the country of 18 and younger athletes, and qualifies him for the Junior Pan Pacific Championship team that will meet in Maui to compete against Pacific-bordering nations. Best of luck to Evan representing Team USA in Hawaii this coming week!!

“What a fantastic meet! Any time you have the fastest swimmers in the country all vying for positions on International teams the atmosphere is going to be both pressure-filled and electric. Our swimmers did a wonderful job of controlling their emotions and focussing on their races. We came away from the meet having gone 9 out of our 13 swims being new lifetime best times. Plus, putting a swimmer on the Junior Pan Pacific Team has now raised the bar for the rest of the swimmers on the Pilot Squad. The message we'll be bringing away from this meet is "If you dream big, listen to your coaches and work hard there's no limit to what you can accomplish. With our strong performance at Southeastern's and a great Nationals, I really feel like we've built some momentum going into our short course season.” ~ Coach Jim Rumbaugh

Congratulations to the 5 Pilot athletes in your representation at the National level. You have all shown great class and leadership in your representation of our team and community on the national scene. The Pilot family is proud and looks forward to our future. GO PACK!!

L;KAJSDFPACK: Huge Success in SES Championships
Over 50 teams paths converged on The University of Tennessee this past weekend to compete in the 2010 Long Course Southeastern Swimming Championships.  The four-day competition, held in both pools, included 963 athletes including a squad of 106 Pilot swimmers.

Pilot Aquatics had an outstanding meet walking away from the meet with a 3rd place finish to Nashville Aquatic Club and Excel.  92% of our swimmers that competed in the meet walked away with lifetime best swims.  Senior swimmer Jenny Darby (17), swam Junior Nationals qualifying standards in the 100 and 200 meter freestyles, and qualified for a Junior Bonus cut in the 50 freestyle.  Dylan Rasnick (16) also swam to Junior Nationals Standards in the 400 IM and a Junior Bonus cut in the 200 IM.  Also qualifying for a Junior B cut was Isaac Taylor (17) in the 50 Freestyle and Ally Hardesty (16) in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke.  Jace Howanitz (20) also racked up a Senior National Bonus cut in the 100 freestyle.

Pilot capped off the successful competition by winning both the men’s and women’s senior age groups and qualifying John Myhre (14) and Adam Thomas (13) for the Southeastern Swimming Zone Championship held in Atlanta, Ga this week, where they will represent the Southeastern Swimming division in competition at the Georgia Tech pool.

“Our kids performed very well this past weekend.  We didn’t reach my ultimate goal of winning the meet but I was encouraged to see so many swimmers making it to the finals.  I know that some parents of our younger swimmers are questioning why we aren’t more competitive in those age groups.  I’d like to first say that our Red, Gold and Black group coaches are doing a fantastic job.  They are doing exactly what I’ve asked of them, and that is, to prepare these young swimmers for a long and healthy future in the sport.  The reason we continue to win both senior divisions at Southeasterns is because we prepare our young swimmers properly.  I’m extremely excited to see the progress of these young swimmers over the next few seasons.

Congratulations on an exceptional summer season.  I am very proud of the way we represented the Pilot team here in our home pool.    ~ Head Coach Jim Rumbaugh

" It is a great opportunity for our swimmers to compete and set the tone for the up-coming season, but I think that it's mostly being able to mix it up and work together with your teammates that makes this meet so fun."

NIKE SPRING CLASSIC – Nashville, Tn

Pilot Aquatic Club participated in All-American NIKE Spring Classic hosted by Nashville Aquatic Club last weekend at Centennial Sportsplex. The 3-day long invitational featured around 10 teams, some of those traveling from Boston and San Diego to compete. This was also Pilot’s first longcourse meet on its schedule and its first opportunity to race in a 50 meter course this summer.
In the midst of the record flooding where 13.5 inches of rain fell in less two days, 37 athletes of the 44 Pilot swimmers swam to personal lifetime best times.

“This was a great way to kick off our season,” says Head Age-Group Coach Jackie Bertucci. “The families on our team did a great job of weathering the storm and showing up to race. We had a lot of really good swims!”

Pilot Swimmers that achieved best times:
Will Arthur (13), Hayden Burns (13), Reese Catron (12), Simone Digby (10), Lucy Fortune (14), Allison Fowler (15), Rachel Fowler (15), Bailey Fritz (9), Emily Galdun (17), Mallory Gardner (13), Courtney Graff (12), Alex Hines (11), Andrew Hines (8), Will Kerr (13), Christina Klouda (13), Josiah Klouda (10), Alli Lapps (12), Bryar Long (12), Ben Myhre (16), John Myhre (14), Miles Nauss (18), Macy Neros (9), Evan Pinion (15), Dylan Rasnick (16), Ethan Sanders (10), Lindsay Sanders (9), Owen Sanders (12), Lauren Sapp (13), Addison Smith (8), Quinn Smith (12), Melinda Taylor (12), Adam Thomas (13), Derek Vaughn (14), Camilla Wang (14), Glenna Whaley (10), Natalie Widmer (11), and Hayden WIlliams (10)

Unfortunately, Sunday’s competition had to be cancelled due to the record flooding. Nearly four and a half feet of rain welled up outside the pool and began spilling in the doorways onto the deck. Although this served as entertainment for many of the swimmers, the building was evacuated so that everyone could return home safely.
Pilot Aquatic Club’s next competition will be the Inter-squad meet this Saturday (May 15th) at Student Aquatic Center. The Red vs. Gold action will begin with our 13 & over swimmers competing in the early morning, and the 12 and unders starting just before 10 a.m. Congratulations on a good beginning to the summer season, and GO PACK!!!

TISCA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010- Nashville,TN Another chapter in the history of the TISCA High School State Championships was written last weekend as 106 high school swim teams from across the state of Tennessee competed for the championship. A total of 881 athletes, 461 boys, 420 girls made up one of the most competitive state meets on record for the State Meet showdown.
Tennessee State Championships is a meet that contributes greatly to the growth of the sport of swimming. Swimmers get a chance to represent themselves and their schools, an experience that is very difficult to find outside of the United States. Some of our Pilot Swimmers had some comments on the meet:

Caleb Allen (JR) “I’m satisfied with my performance and our mentality was pretty positive as a team. Our mentality as a squad led us to our 2nd place team finish, especially on Saturday.”

Isaac Taylor (JR) “The competition was a lot faster than I thought it was gonna be. It just gave me more inspiration to go faster.”

Jenny Darby (JR) “I was really happy with my performances. The team atmosphere of this meet is really motivating and that’s what really inspired me to go fast.”

Kennedy Higdon (SR) “State was really fun this year. As a senior I’m really going miss the atmosphere of this meet and swimming with all my friends. I almost cried before my last race (400 free relay). It was a great way to finish my high school swimming career with Bearden.”

Dylan Rasnick (SO) “I liked the opportunity to bond with the other swimmers (at Webb). The meet being held in Nashville really helped our team come together. I always have fun at state because of the team atmosphere.”

Pilot Aquatic Club had over 75 individual athletes and 6 coaches representing the Knoxville area in the State competition last weekend. Pilot Aquatics Athletes combined to make up over 20% of swimmers representing their schools in the top 16 at evening finals, and over 30% in the top 8. Congratulations to all PACK Swimmers and your accomplishments in representing the Knoxville area. Pilot Aquatic Club will now direct its focus towards District,Southeastern, Sr. Sectional, and Age Group Sectional Championship meets held the next several weekends. GO PACK!!!

THANK YOU PARENTS,
Hello Piloteers,
I wanted to thank you for the time and effort you all put into the meet the past weekend. I talk to my swimmers incessantly about what a "Team" can accomplish when they all work together. We have literally transformed from a number of separate groups to a "Team" as far as our meets are concerned. Everyone, from our meet director, to our officials, to our timers came together to host one of the best meets I've ever been a part of. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

In an effort to host more prestigious meets (Juniors 2011, Grand Prix 2011 or 2012 and eventually Nationals) we have been under the microscope of USA swimming. Your hard work has brought us another step closer to reaching those goals. Please enjoy your well deserved break from hosting meets. We will be back at work this summer with two important meets (June invitational and Southeasterns). We'll need to bring the same enthusiasm and dedication to those meets in order to keep this trend going.

Congratulations, we can all feel very proud about this one.

Coach Jim Rumbaugh

Pilot Aquatic Club : January Classic Invite 2010

Winter Swimming action continued last week as Pilot Aquatic Club hosted its annual January Classic Invitational at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Pilot’s last competition took place over a month and a half ago, making the goal of the home invitational to test out new strokes and racing strategies made from the mid-season championship meet in Nashville.
The meet featured over 900 swimmers from 30 separate teams, and was clearly the best and smoothly run meet Pilot has hosted since opening Allan Jones Aquatic Center in the summer of 2008.
Reflecting this, Pilot swimmers left with many accomplishments. Pilot had 42 athletes that swam to all-time personal best times. Also, 27 swimmers swam to Southeastern Championship time standards, and 7 swimmers also accomplished Age Group Sectional Time Standards, which qualifies them to compete against the Southern Zone’s best age groupers (14 & unders) mid-March in Charlotte North Carolina.
Upcoming meets for Pilot Aquatic Club include the ACAC Lois Weir Invitational in Oak Ridge February 5th-7th, TISCA High School State Championships in Nashville (Feb. 12-13), District 8 & under Championships and Southeastern last chance meet, held at Baylor School of Chattanooga the 20th-21st of February. These meets will be Pilot’s last chances to prepare for Southeastern Championship in Nashville, and either Age Group or Senior Sectional Championship meets later in March.
A special thanks goes out to all parents, workers, officials, and coaches that contributed to the Pilot Aquatic Club’s January Classic Invitational 2010. Your contributions created a great atmosphere for over 900 swimmers to compete in. Thank you and GO PACK!

Pinion Breaks Records on a National Scale- Michael Phelps' Records Smashed
Pilot Aquatic Club is proud to report the wonderful accomplishments of Evan Pinion (14) at Long Course Junior Nationals this past week in Federal Way, Washington.  Pinion placed 13th in the 1500 meter freestyle (15:47.66), 11th in the 400 meter freestyle (3:57.61), 3rd in the 800 meter freestyle (8:08.75), and 83rd in the 200 freestyle (1:55.76) as a fourteen year old, and first time experience at a National Meet.   These times are all new PACK 13-14 age group records, and the 800 freestyle result is also a new Senior Team Record for Pilot Aquatic Club.

The most outstanding performances, however, were the 400 and 800 freestyles, where Evan also broke National Age Group records previously held by none other than Michael Phelps.  These records were set in the year 2000, just several months before Phelps’ first Olympic appearance in Sydney, Australia.

Lundquist sets U.S. record
23-second barrier broken in 100 fly

BY ADAM GREENE, sports@knoxnews.com
Those watching at the Southern Zone Eastern Sectional Championships on Saturday were stunned after Bryan Lundquist's performance in the men's 100-meter butterfly, but not for the right reasons.
Lundquist had just finished in last place at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center. Only his club coach and family in attendance knew what he had truly accomplished. Lundquist's 50-meter time of 22.91 seconds at the split was a new United States record and the first American to clock under 23 seconds.

Bearden junior off to U.S. Open

BY ADAM GREENE sports@knoxnews.com
Division I and Division II college swimmers were in the pool at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the University of Tennessee campus Thursday.

However, a rising junior from Bearden High School won the gold medal in the men's 800-meter freestyle at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone Eastern Sectional Swim Meet.

John Paul Gaylor beat his career-best time from a year ago by nearly six seconds and his next-closest competitor, Baylor Swim Club's Nathan Vredeveld, by more than four seconds to win in 8 minutes, 20.53 seconds. While Gaylor may have surprised some of his collegiate opponents, no one was more shocked than Gaylor.

PACK Fuels the Fire in Hotlanta
Pilot Aquatic Club Seniors attended the Betsy Dubar Invitational in Atlanta, Ga his past weekend with three major goals in mind:  Swim as fast as possible, make adjustments where needed from the PACK Invitational, and have some fun.

Head Coach Jim Rumbaugh was pleased with the team’s progress over the past two weeks:

“The kids are showing good progress in the learning process and adjusting to mistakes they’ve made in the past.  Most of the team’s swims were good improvements.  And even though they are tired, we’re already starting to swim faster with new technique. ”

The team also took part in quite a few activities while staying in Atlanta.  The team had dinner at Dave and Busters, a restaurant that serves everything from wings to steak, and provides interactive and video gaming as part of the entertainment.

Following the Sunday session of the meet, the team hiked Stone Mountain.  Stone Mountain is one of the largest exposed pieces of granite in the world, and also serves as a memorial to three figures of the Confederate States of America which are carved in the side of the mountain: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.

The team finished up the trip with a trip to Six Flags over Georgia.  It was a perfect day for attending a theme park, as there were almost no lines to wait in.  As a result everyone was able to ride many rides more than once and experience a lot of the park in one day’s time.

Pilot Aquatic Club is now looking forward to its Senior Invitational, hosted here in Knoxville from June 11th through the 14th at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
